A Positive Attitude: A Gift Unveiled Part I

A positive attitude gives birth to a new way of thinking that leads to the unveiling of a gift.

This reminds me of a story I heard. Long ago, way back in the early 1900s, before washing machines and before dryers, a mother followed her routine of going outside to hand wash her family’s laundry. As she washed, her baby napped in the house. While the mother was absorbed in her washing, smoke began to mingle with the breaths she took, and that smoke--she noticed--was coming from her house. Without giving it a second thought, the mother charged into the smoke-filled house, battled the fire, and salvaged her baby. During the heroic rescue, the mother’s hands were scorched and charred—a small price to pay for such a priceless gift of life in the sparing of her daughter.

As the daughter grew, she became embarrassed by the sight of her mother’s hands. They were not beautiful. So, when the daughter’s friends visited, she requested that her mother cover her hands with gloves to hide her disfigured hands. On one occasion, the mother forgot to mask her hands, and so the daughter’s friends saw. They saw what was left of the scorched and charred hands, and the daughter was embarrassed and angry. She scolded her mother, and the mother could no longer hold back the story behind her hands: Long ago, way back in the early 1900s, before washing machines and before dryers, a mother followed her routine of going outside to hand wash her family’s laundry. As she washed, her baby napped in the house. While the mother was absorbed in her washing, smoke began to mingle with the breaths she took, and that smoke--she noticed--was coming from her house. “Without giving it a second thought, I ran into the smoke-filled house, battled the fire, and salvaged you. During that heroic rescue, my hands were scorched and charred—a small price to pay for such a priceless gift of life in the sparing of your life,” she finished.

Then the daughter beheld her mother’s hands.

This time instead of seeing scarred and disfigured hands, she saw hands that were beautifully engraved with intricate lines and lovely crevices in exquisite hues. Suddenly, the daughter embraced her mother’s hands and kissed them. And from that day on, she treasured the gift her mother had unveiled.

With a positive attitude, to what new way of thinking can you give birth? This is the story in you. Share it.
