The Empty Nest: A Gift of Power Part III

The empty nest represents more than an empty bedroom or house. Consider an archer who aims his or her bow at a target. The goal of the archer is to hit the most desirable part of the target, the bull’s eye. Your child is an arrow in your bow. When determining your child’s target, consider this:

  • Listen to your child’s ideas
  • Watch what he or she does
  • Identify his or her gifts and talents
  • Support his or her hobbies and extracurricular activities
  • Encourage him or her when things get tough
  • Offer guidance
  • Believe in your child

In the midst of your support and guidance, don’t forget about your own purpose in life. This will help you when it’s time for your arrow to leave your bow.

A child can also be a boomerang—a round trip boomerang that comes back to you after he or she leaves the nest. Sometimes this is by choice, and sometimes it is a result of an adverse event.

Was your child an arrow or a boomerang? Were you an arrow or a boomerang? This is the story in you. Share it.
